Google has announced an overhaul of security for the Premier Apps, which the Company hopes to make services more attractive to businesses.
The upgrade means authentication applications such as Gmail and Google Docs, it will take a two-step process before users can gain access to emails or documents with an authentication code generated by Google in addition existing passwords.
The code can be sent by SMS or voice message to a mobile phone, or can be generated by an application on Android, Blackberry or iPhone handsets.
“This requires two identifiers to connect to a Google Apps account, something you know – a password – and something you have – a mobile phone,” said Eran Feigenbaum, Director of Security for Google Apps in the Google corporate blog.
“When activated by an administrator, it requires two identifiers to connect to a Google Apps account. After entering your password, a verification code is sent to your mobile phone via SMS, voice calls , or produced on an application you can install on your Android, Blackberry, or iPhone. ”
Google says it will make it much harder for anyone to break into an account – even if the scammers have stolen the password – but end users will be able to build computer confidence that bypass the system.
According to Google, the two-stage audit is built on an open standard, which should allow it to be integrated with other authentication technologies, and the company is also open source application so that developers Security can customize the technology.
The company says Google Apps administrators, education, and government publications can activate the audit in two stages from the English version of the admin panel control now.
